Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) seeks to provide state-of-the-art services that guarantee the absolute highest measures of quality and accuracy of laboratory testing in concordance with international laboratory standards and to earn a distinction as the primary reference in the field of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, both locally and regionally, especially in the area of pathology and immunohistochemical studies.

DPLM provides a comprehensive range of clinical services that are offered across its six different laboratories, most of which work around the clock seven days a week, and performs over 8 million tests annually. The department also contains two phlebotomy sections that serve over 400 patients on daily basis.

In 2009, the Department was the first in Jordan to earn an international accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). This achievement confirms that the DPLM has met the highest levels of professionalism and excellence in the delivery of laboratory services, making it part of an exclusive group of more than 6,000 laboratories worldwide that have met the highest standards of excellence. The department was also awarded the Arab Health Award in 2010 in recognition of its exceptional efforts in providing the best quality of patient-focused diagnostic services. In addition, the DPLM provides consultation services for multiple laboratories on both local and regional levels, as well as direct consultations for Jordanian and non-Jordanian patients receiving medical care in different centers.

In 2011, DPLM established the first cancer biobank (KHCCBIO) of its kind in Jordan and the region. KHCCBIO quickly earned its ISO-compliant status as an advanced biospecimen repository focusing on the collection of biological samples for patient-oriented research intended for the ultimate improvement in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cancer patients.

The biobank-related activities continue to incorporate all current international guidelines and best-in-class practices under an approved Quality Management System to procure, process, and store biospecimens for the benefit of researchers in Jordan, its neighboring countries, and researchers throughout the rest of the world.

The DPLM is proud to encompass an exceptional set of over 90 professional and well experienced staff, which includes consultant/specialist Pathologists, medical technologists, medical technicians and supporting services staff.

Our expertise

In cancer, the correct diagnosis is essential for determining the correct treatment options and prognosis, as up to 70% of clinical decisions are made based on laboratory test results. DPLM has added, and continues to add, numerous up to date key diagnostic and predicative tests important for cancer diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, and has recruited several highly qualified pathologists to interpret the results.

DPLM was also among the first few laboratories in the region to adopt a customer focused laboratory automation solution that allows effective, accurate and rapid high-throughput testing of cancer patients. The department has expanded its areas of expertise to include Multiplex Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests in the microbiology section designated for rapid bacterial detection and thus prompt treatment.

In addition, DPLM actively participates in the training of medical graduates (pathologists and medical laboratory technologists) at the national and regional levels in an attempt to contribute in the preparation of an exceptionally-talented and quality-oriented medical staff that meet our institutional standards. This is achieved through a dual-arm pathologist training program that consists of a four-year residency program certified by the Arab and the Jordanian medical council as well as a two-year oncologic surgical pathology fellowship program.
